Thank you to everyone who helped Rethinking Schools mark our 40th anniversary at the home of Bob Peterson and Barbara Miner in Milwaukee, WI.
The party raised just over $10,000, and over 60 folks attended.
It was incredible to feel the energy in the room, to be in the birthplace of Rethinking Schools, and to talk to so many folks who volunteered in the early days as copyeditors, magazine bundlers, writers, and distributors.
As we reflected on four decades of advocating for social justice education, we were reminded that Rethinking Schools exists because of the commitment, talent, and hard work of so many people over the years.
We would be remiss if we didn’t thank the many people who made the celebration possible:
- Rita Tenorio for emceeing the event
- Bob Peterson for his ongoing support of and work with Rethinking Schools
- Bob Peterson, Bob Lowe, Susan Hersh, Melissa Bollow Tempel, and Janan Najeeb for their speaking roles during the program
- Rethinking Schools staff Missy Zombor and Cara Ball-Fitzgerald for being the unofficial welcoming committee
- Barbara Miner, Tonieh Welland, Malorie Larsen, Rita Tenorio, and Mike Trokan for all of your work with the set up, food, beverages, and behind-the-scenes logistics
- And all of the staff, editors, volunteers, and board members past and present, who have made Rethinking Schools the treasured movement it is today
The unwavering love and appreciation for Rethinking Schools is undeniable. At a time when social justice teaching is fiercely under attack, it is no small feat that Rethinking Schools has weathered 40 years. Bob Peterson, co-founder of Rethinking Schools, reminded us that Rethinking Schools has been through many challenging political moments and will continue to be bold in its commitment to social justice teaching.
