ABOUT THE ROLE

The Marketing Manager leads the development and execution of strategic marketing initiatives to expand the reach and impact of Rethinking Schools’ magazine, books, and digital presence. This role is responsible for creating and implementing annual marketing plans, managing print and digital campaigns, overseeing subscription renewals, and developing targeted promotional strategies for new book releases. In addition, they manage Rethinking Schools’ digital media presence by maintaining social media platforms, coordinating email outreach, updating the website, and overseeing the organization’s blog. 

Marketing

  • Help with the development of annual marketing plan and timeline for Rethinking Schools, RS books, and RS website.
  • Implement print and digital marketing, including the acquisition of mailing lists, working with editors on content, and analyzing click and success rates of emails, social media posts, advertising, website visits, etc.
  • Design, oversee, and evaluate subscription renewal e-mailings. 
  • Implement marketing plans for each new book including digital media campaigns, promotional flyers and mailings, contacting publications for reviews, author interviews, and book signing events.
  • Manage audiobook production 
  • Work with the Executive Director and editors, plan and support RS presence at conferences, including staffing booths and sending targeted e-mails.
  • Support design and production of advertising, promotional materials, and publications catalog 
  • Promote magazines and books with bookstores, co-ops, distributors and wholesalers, and college libraries (site licenses).
  • Develop and execute a plan to increase advertisers for the magazine and emails.
  • Keep website events calendar up to date 
  • Promote author events and workshops
  • Chair the marketing committee 

Digital Media

  • Post regularly across major Rethinking Schools social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky) about breaking news that connects to RS publications and politics, activities of RS editors and supporters, and national social justice education updates and events.
  • Maintain the Rethinking Schools blog by managing organizational announcements and news posts 
  • Create email calendar and coordinate the writing, testing, and sending of emails for outreach, marketing, and fundraising purposes.
  • Help update website for new issues and books, corrections and changes.

Fundraising

  • Support the Executive Director in keeping donors informed of Rethinking Schools activities and impact throughout the year, with dedicated correspondence for major donors 
  • Support the planning of fundraising events (online and in-person) and campaigns (e.g. Sustainer September, Giving Tuesday) 
  • Support donor mailings, such as end-of-year letters and thank you notes 

Public Relations

  • Field press and other inquiries (e.g., speaker and media requests) and forward requests to appropriate Rethinking Schools person
  • Develop and coordinate a database of educators and allies to share their stories about Rethinking Schools
  • Maintain media database
  • Coordinate writing and distribution of press releases/e-announcements for magazine and books.

EXPERIENCES & SKILLS

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of digital and print marketing strategies, including email campaigns, social media, and advertising.
  • Experience with data analysis, including tracking email performance, website traffic, and social media engagement.
  • Proficiency in marketing tools such as Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and social media scheduling platforms.
  • Graphic design skills and familiarity with design software (Canva, Adobe Suite) are a plus.
  • Experience in book and/or magazine marketing is highly desirable.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for marketing materials, press releases, and social media content.
  • Ability to engage diverse audiences, including educators, activists, and donors, through compelling messaging.
  • Strong relationship-building skills to coordinate with authors, media, advertisers, and partners.
  • Ability to develop and execute marketing plans and campaigns on schedule.
  • Experience coordinating events, book launches, and conference presence.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Physical Requirements: 
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Load, unload, and transport materials, equipment, and supplies for conference setup and breakdown.
  • Assist with arranging tables, chairs, and other event materials.

Salary and Benefits

Full-time
Salary: $63,000-67,000, commensurate with experience 

Rethinking Schools offers competitive benefits including fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plans, short and long-term disability and life insurance, and a Simplified Employee Pension program.  We also provide generous vacation, sick, holiday, and other paid leave to employees.
