Teach & Organize Series: Teacher Union Organizing Lessons from the South

Join Rethinking Schools and Race Forward for a virtual political education training and discussion on the challenges and possibilities of social justice unionism. Examining North Carolina as a case study, guest speaker Bryan Proffitt will ground attendees in the historical context of education in the South and offer building-level organizing tools and strategies to help build power in your buildings, unions, and beyond.  

The session will also include breakout conversations where attendees can collaborate, reflect on their own contexts, and brainstorm ways to implement and adapt these strategies.

Bryan Proffitt grew up on or around military bases throughout his childhood before landing in North Carolina for good at 16.  For most of the last three decades, he has been a high school history teacher, organizer, and/or elected union leader (local and statewide).  He recently joined the staff of Public School Strong to support educators building a movement to defend and transform public schools through the revitalization of their union locals and strong collaboration with parent and community organizations.
