Voucher Votes
Since 1972, there have been 10 statewide initiatives asking for voter approval to allow public dollars for private schools. None have passed. Following is a tally of votes for voucher measures.
Michigan (’00): 29% yes; 71% no.
California (’00): 30% yes; 70% no.
Washington (’96): 35.5% yes; 64.5% no.
California (’93): 30% yes; 70% no.
Colorado (’92): 33.2% yes; 66.8% no.
Michigan (’78): 26% yes; 74% no.
Maryland (’72): 45% yes; 55% no.
Voters in Oregon, Colorado, and the District of Columbia have also defeated tax-credit plans for private schools.
