DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 26\, Rethinking Schools editor Jesse Hagopian will be in conversation with author Howard Bryant about his book Kings and Pawns: Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson in America\, which tells the the untold story of sports and fame\, Black life in the United States\, and the promise of integration during the Cold War. \nHoward Bryant is the author of 11 books\, an esteemed journalist\, and an award-winning producer. Besides Kings and Pawns\, his books include Sisters and Champions: The True Story of Venus and Serena Williams\, Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original\, Full Dissidence: Notes From an Uneven Playing Field\, The Heritage: Black Athletes\, A Divided America and the Politics of Patriotism\, The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron\, Juicing the Game: Drugs\, Power\, and the Fight for the Soul of Major League Baseball\, and more. \nASL interpretation provided. \nProfessional development credit certificate provided upon request for attendees. \nThese online classes with people’s historians are held at least once a month (generally on Mondays) at 4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET for 75 minutes. In each session\, the historian is interviewed by a teacher and breakout rooms allow participants to meet each other in small groups\, discuss the content\, and share teaching ideas. We designed the sessions for teachers and other school staff. Parents\, students\, and others are also welcome to participate.
