SUMMARY:Teaching Through Local Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Rethinking Schools hosts a panel conversation featuring the author of Amazing Iowa Scientists\, Katy Swalwell\, and high school educator Elizabeth “Lizzie” Zondo to discuss teaching strategies that encourage students to research local histories. \nKaty Swalwell is an educator\, scholar\, and parent committed to creating schools that are equitable\, inclusive\, and joyful spaces where all students\, staff\, and families can thrive.  \nPrior to being at East High School in Waterloo\, Iowa\, Lizzie was a NYC Teaching Fellow in the Bronx and an At-Risk Coordinator in a rural Iowa school. After taking an arts integration professional development course taught by Travis Gratteau-Zinnel\, Lizzie’s students created a book modeled after Katy’s Amazing Iowa Women called Amazing Waterloo Women\, which highlighted the history of local women.  \nThe conversation will focus on approaches to teaching local history through storytelling\, research\, and placed-based learning. The session will also include breakout conversations where attendees can collaborate\, reflect on their own practice\, and brainstorm ways to implement and adapt these strategies in their classrooms. \nParticipants will need access to Zoom. Register for the Zoom link.  \nDate: Tuesday\, July 21st  \nTime: 11 am PST/ 1 pm CST/ 2 pm EST \nThe event is free. To make events like this available to more educators and activists\, we would greatly appreciate your solidarity donation.

SUMMARY:America at 250: Teach Truth — A Teach-In
DESCRIPTION:Join Rethinking Schools editors and contributors for a teach-in on teaching truthfully about the American Revolution amid the pageantry of patriotism during the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This conversation will focus on teaching strategies and critical questions that unearth the voices of dissent from the U.S. past and present.   \nGiven the intersecting crises\, such as the backlash against social justice education\, ongoing genocide\, authoritarian rule\, and more—it is imperative that we equip students with tools for a truthful examination of the American Revolution so we can collectively shape a more just future.  \nParticipants will need access to Zoom. Register for the Zoom link.  \nDate: Thursday\, July 23  \nTime: 4 pm PT/6 pm CT/7 pm ET \nThe event is free. To make events like this available to more educators and activists\, we would greatly appreciate your solidarity donation.
