SUMMARY:"Who Gets to Vote?” Curriculum Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 8\, the Zinn Education Project will host the “Who Gets to Vote?” curriculum workshop that will introduce educators to a voting rights mixer role play that includes a variety of people with firsthand experience having their voting rights granted or denied. The roles reach back as far as the colonial era and forward to the present. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet in groups with other social justice teachers from across the country to discuss ways to address this topic in their own teaching. Rethinking Schools editor Jesse Hagopian will facilitate the workshop. \nWe are witnessing a vicious attack on voting rights\, democratic participation\, and truthful education. History reminds us that we must organize to protect the gains won through generations of struggle. We can help young people see voting as part of a broader effort to improve their lives and communities\, and see themselves as agents of change rather than spectators to politics. \nThis event is a part of our national call to action to teach about voting rights in an age of authoritarianism\, which includes a workshop series focused on voting rights\, Reconstruction\, constitutional struggles\, student organizing\, and the long movement to expand freedom in the United States.

DESCRIPTION:19th Annual Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference\n“Rethinking Our Classrooms\, Organizing for Better Schools” \nSaturday\, October 17th\, 2026\n9:00am – 4:00pm\nLindbergh High School — Renton\, Washington\nOn Saturday\, October 17th\, attend the 19th Annual Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference — co-sponsored by Rethinking Schools — at Lindbergh High School in Renton\, Washington (near Seattle).  \nWorkshop leaders include Rethinking Schools editors Wayne Au\, Linda Christensen\, Grace Cornell Gonzales\, and Ursula Wolfe-Rocca\, and Prentiss Charney Fellows Julia Kirkpatrick and Suzanna Kassouf. \nMorning Keynote: Dr. Terry Anne Scott  \nThe Fight for Voting Rights: From Education to Action  \nDr. Terry Anne Scott is the CEO and Executive Director of the Institute for History and Equity and former Professor of History. At Hood College\, she received numerous awards\, including the college’s highest commendation for professors—the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Scott has also taught at the University of Washington\, where she was nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Scott is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sports History and a member of the Editorial Staff for the Journal of American History. She is the author of several books\, including Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas (winner of the 2022 Ottis Lock Endowment Best Book Award). She is also the editor of Seattle Sports: Play\, Identity\, and Pursuit in the Emerald City\, and the recently published Reclaiming Democracy: A History of Voter Disenfranchisement and the History of Voter Suppression. Scott is featured on regional and national media programs. She consults on museum exhibits and has appeared in several documentaries\, including the critically acclaimed “Lynching Postcards: Token of a Great Day\,” which received a 2022 NAACP Image Award and was short-listed for an Academy Award. Scott is also in the 2023 documentary\, “Sound of the Police\,” which was nominated for an Emmy. \nAfternoon Keynote: Andrea Rogers \nJoyful and Trauma Informed Lawyering: Students Suing Government to Protect Their Constitutional Climate Rights  \nAndrea Rodgers is Deputy Director of U.S. Strategy at Our Children’s Trust\, representing youth in constitutional climate change cases seeking protection of their fundamental rights to a safe climate. In addition to litigating OCT’s domestic cases\, Andrea supports Canada’s first youth-led climate case going to trial in October 2026. Andrea is the author of numerous publications\, including “The Injustice of 1.5º-2ºC: The Need for a Scientifically Based Standard of Fundamental Rights Protection in Constitutional Climate Change Cases”\, which was cited by the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court. Andrea is the 2024 recipient of the Svitlana Kravchenko Environmental Rights Award from Land Air Water at the University of Oregon School of Law and the 2025 recipient of Lakeside School’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Besides Kings and Pawns\, his books include Sisters and Champions: The True Story of Venus and Serena Williams\, Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original\, Full Dissidence: Notes From an Uneven Playing Field\, The Heritage: Black Athletes\, A Divided America and the Politics of Patriotism\, The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron\, Juicing the Game: Drugs\, Power\, and the Fight for the Soul of Major League Baseball\, and more. \nASL interpretation provided. \nProfessional development credit certificate provided upon request for attendees. \nThese online classes with people’s historians are held at least once a month (generally on Mondays) at 4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET for 75 minutes. SUMMARY:Surviving Angola Prison
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, November 9\, Rethinking Schools editor Jesse Hagopian will be in conversation with author Gary Tyler about his book Stitching Freedom: A True Story of Injustice\, Defiance\, and Hope in Angola Prison. In the tradition of books by Albert Woodfox and Angela Davis\, this memoir of a wrongful conviction and time spent on death row in Angola prison shows how incarcerated people care for each other and fight for justice. \nGary Tyler is an artist and a spokesperson for justice. During his years in prison\, Tyler galvanized a movement that grew to have national and international support\, one of the precursors to today’s abolition and Black Lives Matter movements. He was recently named a 2026 Galaxy Gives Leader Fellow and awarded the 2024 Frieze LA Impact Prize\, which recognizes artists who use their talents and abilities to address social justice issues.
